Teams starting to register for Pictou County Relay for Life

-

Momentum is starting to build for this year’s Pictou County Relay for Life.

A kickoff for the relay was held earlier this week at Glasgow Square Theatre in New Glasgow and already seven teams have registered.

The annual fundraiser to raise awareness and money in the fight against cancer will be held June 2 at Glasgow Square running from 6 p.m. to midnight.

Organizers are already hard at work preparing for the event, and co-chair Janine Linthorne says they have a great team working on it with some new members.

The goal for this year is to have about 20 teams participate and raise $68,000, which would be comparable to last year’s total. A portion of that money goes to the Lodge that Gives in Halifax where many people from Pictou County stay while undergoing cancer treatment.

In addition to the traditional Relay for Life activities, ECFM is also helping out once again this year with Radio for Relay which will go from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 2.

“We’re excited to have that continue again this year,” Linthorne said, adding that it helps with the contributions.

Something new this year is a raffle for a Cavendish Beach Festival package which includes tickets and accommodations for four people. Teams are able to raise money by selling tickets on the prize.

Linthorne said they are still looking for someone willing to be this year’s honorary chair. The ideal person would have connections with the community, be organized and outgoing.
