Silver Blades season winding down

Six medals at recent provincial­s

Skaters with the East Pictou Silver Blades posted very good results at a recent provincial competitio­n in Pictou County.

At the 2018 Star Skate provincial­s held at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, the Thorburnba­sed club had six skaters compete in total of eight events, winning six silver medals and a gold.

EPSB medal-winners:

Makayla McGee – Silver in Star 2 singles

Ella MacIntyre – Silver Star 2 singles

Adelle Thomsen – Silver Star 3 singles

Ariel Ferris – Silver Star (3 singles), and Silver Star (3 Elements)

Jessica Arnold – Silver (Star 3 singles)

Lauren Hanna – Gold (Star 1 singles)

McGee, MacIntyre, Thomsen and Arnold also won silver in the Star 2 team event.

This was the first competitio­n for Hanna, while Arnold and Thomsen moved up to Star 3 from Star 2 at the competitio­n.

Ice show:

The club annual ice show – this year’s theme was “Get Animated”

– took place on March 3 and featured more than 40 skaters from CanSkate, Pre-Star, Special Olympics and figure skating.

Club Awards

Several award winners were recently announced at the recent Silver Blades awards ceremony:

• Ariel Ferris won star skater of the year for the EPSB club. This award gives her an invitation to the Skate Canada/Nova Scotia AGM, where she will perform in the gala. She is also nominated as the provincial Star Skater of the Year.

• Adelle Thomsen won the Helping Hands award. This is voted on by the skaters and goes to the skater most voted as someone who is always positive, helpful and encouragin­g to the other skaters.

• Makayla McGee won the Derek Brightman Memorial Trophy for most improved figure skater in the club.

• Lauren Hanna won the Connie Frazee Memorial Award, which celebrates a skater who embodies the spirit of skating.

• Kenzie Benoit won CanSkater of the year, a provincial nomination, and she will take part in the Nova Scotia gala at the AGM in May. She will move into the Silver Blades’ Pre-Star program next season.

• Lexi Smith-Albert was the recipient of the Shining Star Award. This is awarded to the Pre-Star skater who has shown great improvemen­t over the year, has a positive attitude and exudes the love of skating.

• Keegan Jardine received the CanSkate champion award, given to a CanSkater who consistent­ly worked hard and showed a love for skating during the program.
