The Halifax Highland Dance Associatio­n hosted the Halifax Highland Open Championsh­ip, the Citadel Open Premiershi­p and Spring Competitio­n on March 24 and 25 in Bedford.

The judges for the event were Janis Burkhardt of Michigan, Margaret Howard of Florida and Jacqueline Smith of Ontario. Daniel Carr was the piper for the events.

Results for Pictou County dancers are as follows:

Halifax Highland Open Championsh­ip Premier 12 & Under 14 – Annika Murray: Fling 1st, Sword 2nd, Sean Triubhas 2nd, Reel 5th. 1st runner-up trophy winner.

Premier 14 & Under 16 – Ainslie Salter: Fling 5th, Sean Triubhas 5th, Reel 5th. 4th runner up trophy winner.

Citadel Open Premiershi­p Premier 12 & Under 14 – Annika Murray: Scotch Measure 2nd, Earl of Errol 1st, Flora 3rd, Jig 3rd. 1st runner-up trophy winner.

Premier 16 & Under 18 – Beth McNeill: Scotch Measure 6th, Flora 5th, Jig 6th.

Spring Competitio­n Novice 10 – Abigail White: Fling 4th, Sword 3rd, Sean Triubhas 6th. Allister had worked at Hawker Siddeley for several years and later worked with and was a supervisor with the Public Works Dept. for the Towns of Westville and New Glasgow. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid Blue Jays and Habs fan. Allister had a dry wit and was known for joking with his family and friends. Most of all Allister’s greatest enjoyment was children and was affectiona­tely known as “Papa Al” to his grandchild­ren and “Bubba” to his nieces and nephews.

He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Robin Fraser, Westville; sons, Robert, Westville, and Ryan (Alma), Herring Cove; stepsons, Chris Chamberlai­n (Anna), Mississaug­a, and Keith Chamberlai­n (Stephanie), Port Williams; grandchild­ren: Kelsey, Ethan, Noah, Alexander, Sophie, Sydney, Cadee, Gabriel, Luci, Katherine, and Victoria; his wife, Donna, Dartmouth. He is also survived by his sister, Mary, Westville; brothers, Joe, Durham; Tom (Anne), Sylvester; Peter (Vikki), Caribou; his former wife, Rose; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predecease­d by his sisterin-law, Rose, and nephew, Joseph.

Allister is resting at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville with visiting on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday from the Church of the Holy Name with Father Peter MacDonald officiatin­g. TONEY RIVER – Elaine MacLeod, 1933 – 2018, passed away in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on March 29th, 2018.

Elaine got her early education at Toney River School. After completing a Commercial Course at Pictou Academy she worked in Halifax for Wrathall Ins. and General Motors Ins. Division. Upon her marriage to Aubrey MacLeod she again took up residence in Toney River where she raised her children, Cindy and Johnny. Returning to the work force she was employed by Northumber­land Ferries Ltd. until her retirement. She was often the first friendly and helpful presence to many tourists travelling to PEI via ferry. Elaine was active in Melville Presbyteri­an, Caribou River, until its closure when she became a member of First Presbyteri­an Church in Pictou. She was supportive and contribute­d to her church, the community halls in Toney River and Caribou River, and the local 4-H program. During the “growing up” years of her son she was a valuable member of the earlier generation of Summer Street Industries. Elaine will long be remembered for her listening ear, her quiet acceptance of people and her loving kindness to many.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years; her children, Cindy (Kenn) Pettipas and Johnny; her grandson, Troy Cock (Rebecca Battist); and her great-grandchild­ren, Keira and Brody Cock; chosen great-grandchild­ren, Isolde, Ronan and Nola; sister, Jacquie (Eric) Ross; sisters of the heart, Rowlena Cole and Theresa Brown; nieces, Megan (Chris) Obst, Robin (Geoff) MacLeod, Betty MacLeod, Catherine Shaw, Marilyn MacKenzie (Paul), and nephew, Grant (Shannon) Henderson.

Elaine was predecease­d by her parents, John and Violet Colquhoun; sister and brother-in-law, Kaye and David Henderson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgie Burke, Mabel MacKenzie, Roy and Jean MacLeod, Allie MacLeod; and sister of the heart, Eldora Sutherland.

Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou, with Visitation 6-9 p.m. Monday. A service to celebrate Elaine’s life will be held at First Presbyteri­an, Pictou, at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, with Jacquie Ross officiatin­g. Family flowers only.
