Thorburn Golden Hawks ‘golden’ banner winners in PCMHA Challenge Cup
The Thorburn Golden Hawks Midget C1 captured the PCMH Challenge Cup Banner on home ice Sunday afternoon with a thrilling comeback in the third period.
The Golden Hawks started the tournament on Wednesday with a hard-fought loss to TrentonTRAB team, 4-3. In their next game Friday night against the second Trenton team, the Hawks held on to 3-3 tie, leaving Thorburn needing to secure two wins on Saturday to have any chance at the championship game.
On Saturday, playing an aggressive Stellarton team, they picked up a 4-1 win.
The final game pinned them against their brother team Thorburn C2, with goalie Tanner MacIvor getting a 4-0 shutout, placing them third in the round robin.
Due to Trenton-TRAB being in a tournament in Truro and going for gold there, Trenton forfeited their seeding and allowed for Thorburn to play in the championship
game against Pictou.
In the title tilt, Pictou started off strong with two goals in the first period, but Hawks goaltender Wesley Kelly shut the door the rest of the game and, in what was a battle of chances and crossbar hits, the game remained 2-0
going into the final period.
In the third, the Hawks played a more disciplined game, with Owen Fraser pushing the play and getting the Hawks on the scoreboard with two goals to tie the game going into the last two minutes of play. With Thorburn having
the momentum and the crowd behind them, Pictou fell into penalty trouble and the Hawks’ Keegan Martin took advantage; he blasted a goal past the Pictou goalie with just 22 seconds left as Thorburn captured their second banner in two weeks.
