Long list of employers to participate in job fair

- BY SUEANN MUSICK

There is no better time to make a good first impression than at an upcoming job fair, says an employer engagement specialist with the Career Connections Nova Scotia Works Pictou County.

Heather MacIsaac said the upcoming job fair taking place April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre is an opportunity to greet employers with a smile, handshake and a resumé.

“The job fair is a great opportunity to meet face to face with employers,” she said, adding that since a lot of employers now accept resumés online, this is an opportunity for people to meet the people who do the hiring in person. “Having them there is an opportunity to ask, ‘What are you looking for in a resume?’ or ‘What training do I need to take at school to work with you?’”

MacIsaac said this will be one of the fair’s largest years and it will include some new participants such as Zenabis, Michelin Tire, Chignecto-Central Regional Education Centre and Peace by Chocolate.

“The wait list continues to grow,” she said. “It’s a good sign. There are jobs in Pictou County.”

She said the event has been designed to provide job seekers a chance to network with employers and educational institutions while learning more about the kinds of jobs available in the community.

Some of the employers participating in the fair include Boston Pizza, Sobeys, Glen Haven Manor, Divert NS, Safety First, Steel Pro, Staples, Fox Hab’r, North Nova Seafoods, NSCC, Earth Angels, Stright MacKay, Service Canada, Crombie REIT and Pictou Lodge.

MacIsaac said Career Connections is available to help people construct their resumés or print off copies. She said people attending the fair should have several copies available and make sure their appearance is clean and tidy.

“First impressions are important,” she said, adding people should treat the job fair as a preinterview.

This is a free event, open to the public. For more information, contact MacIsaac at the Career Connections Nova Scotia Works Pictou County office at 902-7520128 or email hmacisaac@careerconnections.ca
