Looking to lose weight?
First let’s see what the stomach and fat tissue are saying to the brain “behind closed doors!”
Did you know how smart your stomach and fat tissue really are? Let me begin by telling you that your fat has the ability to produce a hormone known as leptin. Leptin sends a message to the brain to tell it that you are satisfied and lowers appetite. Leptin is a fatburning hormone and when it is burning fat, it is suppressing the appetite.
On the other hand, the stomach produces ghrelin, also known as the hunger hormone causing you to circle the fridge like a hungry lion.
How do we know that our leptin is functioning at an adequate level? One can get levels measured but if you look at what inhibits the optimal function of leptin then ask yourself if any of these pertain to you. First and foremost, leptin is lowered as we gain more fat on our bodies. The fat causes the release of C-reactive protein (a measurement of inflammation in the body) which prevents the leptin from crossing the blood brain barrier therefore creating a weak/absent feedback system to tell the brain that we are full. So appetite is going out of control and once again weight gain continues.
Other reasons for leptin resistance are, poor sleep, stress, high sugar snacks. Skipping breakfast lowers it as well. Intermittent fasting increases Leptin.
To lower ghrelin (feeling hungry), eat breakfast, get proper sleep, decrease stress, optimal protein intake, intermittent fasting and intermittent strength and aerobic exercise.
Thyroid function is very important for weight loss and is affected by leptin resistance. Having an optimal functioning thyroid aids in proper weight loss.
