John W. “Jack” Mahar

-

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our Dad, John W. “Jack” Mahar of MacLellan’s Brook, N.S., who passed away April 19, 2018, in the Aberdeen Hospital.

Born in Charlottetown, P.E.I., on Feb. 8, 1932, he was the son of the late William and Lena (Jerrior) Mahar and the late Joe Byrne (stepfather).

Jack was born in Charlottetown and moved to Pictou County, N.S., as a young boy with his mother the late Lena (Jerrior) Mahar and the late Joe Byrne (stepfather). It was shortly after he met his late wife Ada (MacIntosh) Mahar, and together they raised their five children in Priestville, N.S.

In his younger years Jack worked in the Greenwood Mine (Thorburn), and always had a passion for cars and trucks. He drove a truck for many years before starting his own business – Mahar’s Auto Sales, and in his later years he loved being in the garage and going on countless tow calls with his beloved sons. At 86 years young, he loved working every day until the last few years when he was no longer able. He was an adherent of the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton.

A loving and humorous father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he loved bringing together his large family for any event possible, filling the room with laughter, a good ‘feed’ and love.

He is survived by his children: sons Alex (Rachel), Billy (Teresa); daughters Carolanne (Bill) Meyer, Frances (Ray) Stewart, Cathy (Marty) Veenhuis; grandchildren Diane, Jason, Greg, Wade; Sonya, Michelle, Virginia, Gary; Lena, Travis, Justin; Michael, Robert, Kevin, Chelesa, Julie, Ryan, Eileen, Maria and Sarah; 45 great-grandchildren and special companion, Zoie (now in the loving care of Elderdog Pictou County).

He was predeceased by his wife Ada (MacIntosh) Mahar.

His remains will rest at the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, for visiting from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday from the First Presbyterian Church, Stellarton, with the Rev. Charles McPherson presiding.

Burial will take place in the Castle Hill Cemetery, Maclellan’s Brook. A reception will follow the burial at the First Presbyterian Church Hall, Stellarton.

Donations in memory of Jack may be made to the Palliative Care Unit Kitchen of the Aberdeen Hospital or to Elderdog Pictou County.

Thank you to all the nurses in the Aberdeen Hospital and Palliative Care Unit who helped with the care and comfort of Jack over the past few months.
