Creative Connections at your local library

- Holly MacLean Holly MacLean is the Community Outreach Assistant for Pictou County.

Inspiration can come to people in a variety of places. It could be with a group, or as an individual. Often times people come to the library looking for ideas before taking on their next craft project, or the library inspires them to try something new. Whether you’re trying to make something crafty or helping others with their projects, drop into the library to see what kind of creative connections you can make.

Yarn, paint and flowers — oh my!

We have some programs coming up sure to channel your inner creativity. This month’s Get Crafty at the New Glasgow Library on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. will walk attendees through the steps to create a Yarn Jar. Supplies will be included.

As the birds return for the spring, let them be your inspiration with a Spring Bird craft this Saturday, April 28, at the Pictou Library. Drop in during open hours with the family. All supplies are included.

If lack of flowers are getting you down lately, and you’re looking to incorporate them into a springinspired craft, join the Westville Library on May 2 at 2:30 p.m. for their monthly Community Café. This month’s theme, titled “Flower Power Crafting Hour,” has a couple options for attendees to get creative.

The first option is making a paper flower out of recycled book pages with step-by-step folding instructions, and if people want to paint it afterwards they can. The other part of this session, if attendees choose to, is sketching out and painting a flower on a five-by-seven-inch canvas with acrylics.

Flowers are a sure sign of spring and, whether they’re paper or painted, these ones won’t wilt or wither away. The “Flower Power Crafting Hour” is for all abilities with tea, coffee and snacks provided. Supplies will also be provided.

Creative with a camera

Photography and videography skills are a great way to get creative. For those who may be struggling with where to start, why not start with the library? On April 27 at 7 p.m., Eastlink producer Corbin Parent will be giving a talk called Camera 101. In this informative session, Corbin will give tips on how to capture highquality video and audio at live events. Some topics of discussion will include how to effectively use an HD camera, setting up/monitoring audio levels and what to watch out for. All are welcome. Pre-registration is required for this event since space is limited. To register in advance, please call 902-752-8233.

April is Amnesty Month = food for fines

For those looking to reduce their overdue fines, there is still time to get your food donations to the library for the month of April. We’re accepting donations of non-perishable items for the local food bank, in return for fine forgiveness of overdue library fines of $3 per item (can, jar, box).

For more information on upcoming library programs, special events and services, please drop by your local library branch, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook or visit us online at www. parl.ns.ca.
