Rock Steady tour

- BY ADAM MACINNIS

Veterans of Atlantic Canada Celtic music scene, Rawlins Cross is playing the deCoste Performing Arts Centre

Rawlins Cross will treat fans to a mix of old and new songs as they take the stage at the deCoste Entertainment Centre this evening.

Dave Panting, who along with his brother Geoff founded the Celtic band back in the 1980s in St. John’s, N.L., said they have six new songs from their recently released record Rock Steady, which they will be performing but he promises “people are still going to hear a lot of the old favourites.”

The new songs, while unique, contain the elements that fans have come to appreciate from the band. While in the past many of their songs were written by Geoff and Dave Panting, this record includes songs written by some of the other band members, as well.

The Pictou performance is part of a tour the band is on for the next couple months which will take them through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Ontario between now and the end of May.

After working hard to put the music together, Panting said it’s nice to be able to share it with the audience.

He said he loves being able to perform with the rest of the band live.

“You can’t beat the energy of five or six people playing together,” he said. “This lineup has been together since ’93.”

The band performed at the Lobster Carnival last year and at the deCoste many times in the past so it’s familiar territory, Panting said.

“Come on out,” he said. “We’ll give you our best.”

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the deCoste.
