What makes a good pizza?

- BY FRAM DINSHAW

Lee Stewart loves a meaty cheesy pizza topped with brown sauce.

For him, the best pizza is a wellearned weekly treat after several days of working out at the gym.

His preferred pizza joint? Acropole Pizza in New Glasgow, just around the corner from where he lives.

But he and hundreds of others found themselves at pizza paradise at the Pictou County Wellness Centre, where the Rotary Pizza Fest ran on Saturday evening.

His verdict on Pictou County pizza is simple: “It’s all good.”

His love of brown sauce on pizza was shared by fellow New Glaswegian Sarah Burton, who enjoys a generous crust and a lot of cheese on her slices.

But she refused to divulge the biggest amount of pizza she ate in one sitting.

“The most pizza? I’m not saying that ... a few pieces maybe,” said Burton.

But she was spoilt for choice by local pizza vendors, selling everything from exotic Mediterranean flavours to a chicken shawarma variety.

However, waitress Dawn Hayman from Sam’s Pizza said that Greek pizza was without a doubt the very best. They offered attendees flavours including pepperoni, vegetarian and donair.

“We pretty much have it all,” said Hayman.

Money raised from the festival will be used by the Rotary Club of New Glasgow to help pay for a new playground at Rotary Park.

Possible themes for the new playground include a train set or boat that children can play in, reflecting both the railway and maritime heritage of New Glasgow.

The Rotary Club, which backs projects both locally and abroad, decided on a local playground after its members and young families said they needed one for the area.

While locally-raised money will be vital for the new playground, member Jeff Davis previously said that other funding sources may also play a part, such as The Great Trail (formerly the Trans Canada Trail) fund.

The Rotarians have also been in talks with potential local sponsors and had contacted the office of local MP Sean Fraser.
