Kickin’ Vixens season under way
The Kickin’ Vixens are back for another season of roller derby mayhem.
“It always just looked like fun,” says Heather Brimicombe of Trenton, when asked what got her into the sport.
“I’d been wanting to do it for a while.”
Based out of the rink in Trenton, the Kickin’ Vixens got their season started this past Friday with a 311-222 win against the Avon River Rollers team the Rebel Belles, who were playing their first-ever game.
When the ice is removed at Trenton rink each March, the Kickin’ Vixens, who play under the Highland District Derby umbrella, hold practices from 6 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday.
Over the winter months, they have held workouts at local gymnasiums, but the team at present is searching for a venue they can use for next fall/winter.
The team plays games – or ‘bouts,’ as they are usually called – in Halifax, Saint John, Moncton, Cape Breton, Fredericton, Summerside and now, the Annapolis Valley. Their next bout is June 16 in Fredericton and a home game is slated for July 7 at the Trenton rink.
The team is always looking for new players, who will be given plenty of time to work on their skills until they’re prepared enough to play a bout.
“People are welcome to drop by and check it out,” added Brimicombe, who is in her second season with the Kickin’ Vixens.
“Or they can put on skates and try it. We can always use more players – the more people we have, the better.”
She said the sport can get a little rough at times, but the players are well-protected.
