The ‘Ultimate’ experience

Pictou County Ultimate holding a clinic for females

Pictou County Ultimate is holding a clinic for females this coming Saturday at Northumberland Regional High School.

The clinic, which takes place from 10 a.m. until noon in the school gymnasium, is intended to develop skills and knowledge of Ultimate Frisbee, while at the same time trying to encourage more females to get involved in the sport. The clinic is for females 14 years and up and is free of charge.

“We want to promote getting more women involved in Ultimate,” said Ali Hayward, one of the clinic’s organizers. “There are more guys than women who play Ultimate, so we wanted to encourage new players to try it.”

The first hour will concentrate on the basics of the sport (the different methods that one can use to throw a Frisbee, as well as offensive and defensive concepts) and general rules for those who have not played Ultimate.

Participants will then be broken off into smaller groups to work on individual skills. The last part of the clinic will feature a scrimmage, in order to get some game experience for the new players.

“It might be less intimidating than a co-ed environment for new players, or the ones with less experience,” said Melissa Jackson.

Close to 90 players were involved with PCU’s winter program at the William M. Sobey Sports Complex in Stellarton.

“In the summer, we’ll have anywhere from 60 to 80,” Hayward said.

Registration for PCU’s summer league, with games to be played at the Scott Weeks Sports Complex in New Glasgow, will get underway in June.
