Grade 12 student lands grant to present Earth Day event in Lismore
Taking It Global, a federal youth grant program, helped make possible an Earth Day celebration at Lismore Hall recently.
Working locally to make it happen was Danielle MacEachern, a Grade 12 student at North Nova Education Centre In New Glasgow.
MacEachern said she was surprised and pleased to be the recipient of a grant and is grateful to Taking It Global for choosing her project to fund.
She has lived in rural Pictou County all of her life, in Baileys Brook, and decided last fall, as she began her Grade 12 year, that she would go beyond her usual volunteering at local concerts and dinners and try to start something new to get youth involved in the community.
She created, in connection with the Lismore Community Centre, the Lismore Youth initiative. She formed a schedule of events for the initiative and one of the last ones for this school year was an Earth Day celebration. MacEachern asked many residents of Pictou County to present at her event. The lineup included speakers, harpist Caedda Enright and other NNEC students that assisted with making the afternoon a great success.
The grant she received is a Canada Service Corps Grant she applied for online from Taking It Global (TIG) last winter. TIG’s motto is inspire, inform, involve. They live by the mission of empowering youth to understand and act on the world’s greatest challenges.
MacEachern thanked all those involved in making the day a success whether assisting, speaking or just coming out to take part.
