Michelin’s Special Olympics Torch Run to be held June 7 in Pictou County
This June, the Special Olympics Nova Scotia (SONS) Provincial Summer Games are coming to Halifax. To get Nova Scotia communities into the spirit and to encourage all to cheer on Special Olympics athletes, Michelin is hosting three torch runs during the month of June in Pictou County, the Annapolis Valley and the South Shore.
This week and next, Michelin employees, retirees, relatives, friends, teachers and students will take to the roads, along with Special Olympic athletes and special needs individuals.
“This year, we’re proud to support both the provincial and national Special Olympics games in Nova Scotia,” said Jeff MacLean, President, Michelin North America (Canada) Inc.
“Special Olympics is part of our company’s history in Nova Scotia and it’s very close to our hearts. We encourage all to join us during the torch run route this upcoming week and during the Games this June 8-9, to cheer on and celebrate our Nova Scotian Special Olympians.”
The Torch Run in Pictou County will be June 7, starting at 10 a.m. at the Michelin Pictou County gatehouse.
The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games will take place in Antigonish from July 31-Aug. 4.
The Games is a qualifying event for athletes to represent Canada at the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games.
There are expected to be nine sports featured at the Games: athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, rhythmic gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, softball and swimming.
More than 3,000 spectators will be on site to experience the Games, in addition to over 900 athletes, 290 coaches, officials and mission staff and 600 volunteers.
