MS Walk sees increased support
The weather was sunny yet refreshingly cool, spirits were high, and a column of people and their pets marched in support of a good cause, last Sunday.
This past weekend, the MS Walk in New Glasgow hit significant milestones as a fundraising activity in support of those who struggle with multiple sclerosis.
“I had a great time at the New Glasgow MS Walk. We are always grateful for the continued support of our volunteers and participants at the New Glasgow MS Walk who for over 15 years,” said Whitney Machin, a senior coordinator with MS Atlantic Division.
“(The volunteers) have shown their continued support in the fight to end MS.”
According to MS Society spokesperson Fahima Gibrel, both participation and fundraising spiked at this year’s walk compared to the previous year. The total amount of funds amassed at this year’s MS Walk surpassed was $17,188 as opposed to $13,247 the previous year. A total of 64 participants took to the streets and trails in 2018, with 52 having
done so the year before.
The New Glasgow MS Walk was one of 13 that took place across the Atlantic provinces in May. The walk started in 1991, and is now one of the MS Society’s most important events. The entirety of the proceeds from each MS Walk goes toward MS research.
Nationally, the MS Walk involves
over 60,000 participants and volunteers in more than 130 communities across Canada.
The family-oriented event gets its support from the communities in which it takes place, and can help make a difference in the lives of Canadians living with MS. It’s also the largest pledge-based fundraiser of the year.
