Relay for Life surpasses $60K

-

Teams raised more than $60,000 Saturday during Pictou County’s Relay for Life at Glasgow Square.

Jeana’s Girls were presented the newly named Marilyn DeCoste Award as the top fundraising team.

On behalf of the organizing committee Co-Chairs Janine Linthorne and Vicki Moore congratulated all teams and thanked everyone who contributed so generously.

“The people and businesses of Pictou County are amazing,” said Linthorne.

Moore added that the community is generous in supporting many causes in the community.

“It is uplifting to see so many youth taking part and to see the support they receive for their volunteer efforts,” she said. “This is a true team effort across the board. We are all united for this cause that touches the lives of so many.”

Although the weather wasn’t great, people were still enthusiastic.

“It was wet and cold, but people were so determined and still smiling through it all,” Linthorne said. “The Radio Relay was also a huge success and traffic was busy here all day long with people dropping by to make pledges and see the entertainment. It adds great energy and excitement to the event.”

There were 100 cancer survivors who were celebrated at a special reception.

“It is an honour for us to recognize the survivors,” Moore said. “They are a great inspiration.”

Pictou County Relay for Life Community Champion Neil MacKinnon, who is a cancer survivor, was especially pleased with the show of support from youth in the community which was reflected through many of the Relay teams.

In his remarks to the crowd MacKinnon gave a special shoutout to the health care professionals who help those dealing with cancer day in and day out and also to the caregivers and family whom he called the unsung heroes. He also thanked everyone who has participated in the Relay and said every gesture made to survivors makes a difference. MacKinnon also mentioned the late Dr. Cole whom he called “a hero to so many.”
