In 2008: STELLARTON — He started it. He finished it. Powerlifter David MacDonald proudly carried the Special Olympic torch for two legs yesterday, taking a turn on the Pictou side of the water before carrying the flame to the finish at the Museum of Industry in Stellarton. MacDonald — and a team of 55 athletes and coaches from Pictou County — will make their way to Halifax today for the Nova Scotia Special Olympics Summer Games at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. The New Glasgow native will compete in bench press, squat and deadlift. He benches about 135 pounds, with a personal best squat of 170 and a deadlift of 285.

“This weekend will be fun, I like seeing everyone and competing,” said MacDonald.
