Intolerance on the increase: LGBTQ2 in North America

- Gerard Veldhoven Gerard Veldhoven is a longtime activist for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. His column appears Wednesdays in The News.

A long-awaited separation has occurred that involves the Boys Scouts of America and the Mormon Church. The church has a policy that is decidedly anti-gay and the discriminatory action to separate from the Boy Scouts has finally taken place. The reason given is that leaders in the Scouts may include gays, and that has the Mormons upset, and so the action to separate is a natural conclusion.

Following a century of “marriage,” this divorce is the result of the discrimination against the LGBTQ2 community. This is not a new phenomenon and certainly will occur again in the future.

In the United States, a movement has developed that strongly suggests LGBTQ2 fortunes are on the decline. State after state is adjusting their laws to increase bans on many social issues that hurt the LGBTQ2 citizens in that country. Adoption laws are being adjusted that prohibit gay couples from becoming parents, decidedly lessening the opportunity for parentless children to be part of a family where love could be theirs to enjoy.

Donald Trump constantly fuels the fires of intolerance that affect the attitudes and antiquated laws of many countries around the globe, such as, Russia, Uganda and many others. Social issues are being tampered with in an unprecedented manner. A country that prides itself to be the best country in the world, with advanced technology (perhaps), the most powerful armed forces and the most destructive weapons is, without doubt, one of the most backward nations when it concerns social issues.

Equality for all is not a strong point in the U.S., and it’s high time for Americans to stand up against the ruling conservative Republican Party, and its president, who also prides himself as a warm-hearted, perfect leader, to demand all are treated with respect, bar none.

If this trend continues, we are surely headed for a divided society and the dedicated people who desire a united world, will experience a disastrous set-back. We cannot let this happen and those responsible for divisions must be held accountable.

Society is on the verge of serious setbacks unless we stand up for equality in a spontaneous manner that will have a positive effect on our very existence. Actions by such organizations as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and many other religious sects and right-wing ideology are at the core of our inability to seek equality in all its forms. These “Christian” groups as well as other religions, who profess to love all, are really obsessed with division.

It has been my experience that many Christians are very open to equal rights for the LGBTQ2 community. At a ceremony for the LGBTQ2 victims who were massacred in an Orlando bar, a member of the clergy told those gathered that religion was the root cause of discrimination against LGBTQ2 people, and much of that continues to this day. The minister called for this to end.

In order for equality to become a reality all forces condemning must seek to accept and respect all. We are who we are, and we come into this world in all forms and in all sorts.

By birth we are part of humankind, and as living beings we are all the same somehow. Some are born straight, many gay, some trapped in the wrong body and feel the need for change, and act on that to become a whole person. We do not choose our sexual orientation.

Who would expose themselves to the hatred, the suicides and discriminatory action if the choice was ours to make?
