Mother: Son was walking home when killed

-

SYDNEY, N.S. — The mother of a 17-year-old boy who was struck and killed on a Cape Breton highway says he was bending over to tie his shoe as he walked home from a graduation party.

Jenn Hanna says her son Joneil was at a graduation house party in Leitches Creek and began walking home with friends along Highway 223 after the party at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

She told CTV Atlantic that he was struck by a car after stopping to do up his shoe and his friends pulled him out of the ditch to do CPR, but he died a short time later in hospital.

Police say a vehicle was seized at the scene, but they will not say if any charges will be laid.
