NEW GLASGOW – It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Joseph Dorrington, age 86. John passed away on June 12, 2018 in the Aberdeen Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Glasgow he was a son of the late William Joseph and Donelda Kathleen (MacKay) Dorrington.

John was a lifelong resident of New Glasgow. He was employed at Maritime Steel and also owned and operated J.D.’s Grocery on Trenton Road for many years.

John was a kind, loving family man with a huge heart. He always had time to sit and visit with anyone who was willing to talk, particular­ly about sports and current affairs.

An avid sports fan and athlete. He played baseball, hockey, broomball and umpired many baseball games. He was proud to be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame for both hockey and baseball in 2008.

He is survived by his daughters, Debra (Bruce) Robinson, Halifax; Jacquelyn Keating, Westville; Sandra (Kevin) Baird, New Glasgow; eight grandchild­ren; one great-granddaugh­ter; brother, George (Mary) Dorrington, New Glasgow; sister, Gertrude Wright, Stellarton.

He was predecease­d by his wife, the former June Christie, granddaugh­ter, Amanda Robinson, brothers, Frank, Sam, brother-in-law, James Wright, and a son-in-law, Sandy Keating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 15, 2018, in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2018, in Christian Fellowship Church, Abercrombi­e Road, New Glasgow with Pastor Bruce Morrison officiatin­g. Cremation will follow. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of your choice. Family flowers only.
