Homecoming golf tournament to mark 30th year

-

The Stellarton Homecoming golf tournament will mark its 30th edition next month.

Teams of four will contest for the title of the 2018 Stellarton Homecoming Golf Tournament champions on July 26 at the Abercrombie Golf and Country Club.

The tournament started in 1989 and for most years had been run by the Homecoming committee members, but a few years ago the 110 Wing of the RCAFA in Stellarton took on the responsibilities of organizing the event.

In recent years, interest in the tournament has been on the rise.

“At one point, we looked at not having the tournament anymore,” said 100 Wing president Jeff Green.

“We were getting 13, 14 teams. But in the last number of years, we’ve been getting 18, 20 teams, which is a pretty good response.”

Green said the intent is not to make a lot of money from the golf tournament, but to make it part of the Stellarton Homecoming experience in late July.

“We’re just here to make sure the bills are paid,” he said.

“You get 80 to 100 people together to play in it, that’s part of the Homecoming.”

Four person teams may enter, but individuals may also take part by contacting the RCAF 110 Wing at 902-752-5168 after 3 p.m. through the week and after noon on weekends (individuals will be placed on teams).

Payment must be received in full when players and/or teams register. Cost to enter the event will be $50 per person (Abercrombie members will pay $40). The fee includes a steak supper at the Wing after the completion of the golf. Carts are paid for and booked when you call the 100 Wing to register with an additional cost of $20 per person.

The format will be a best ball with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.

The tournament is sponsored by Archway Insurance, Sam’s Pizza and the Town of Stellarton and the winning foursome will be awarded the D.R. Hayman Trophy. The runner-up team will receive the Bob White Memorial Trophy, in memory of the longtime organizer.

Players are asked to arrive at the course by 12:30 p.m. on the day of the tournament.

There will be a celebration and steak supper at the 110 Northumberland Wing on Foord Street in Stellarton upon the completion of the event, to award trophies and individual prizes.
