Imagine the best world you can

-

To the editor,

I visit my childhood home in Pictou County every couple of months.

This last visit was filled with swimming at the beach, eating seafood and shopping at local businesses. But I couldn’t help wonder what this place could really be and what’s at stake.

What could the county be if all its natural wonders (there are so many) were cherished?

Can you just imagine how we could thrive?

It’s the worst case for some of you, but say the local pulp mill closed altogether and we saved our shores and waters. Couldn’t we pick each other up? Couldn’t we make use of our skills and expertise in enterprises that benefit the future?

Open your minds and hearts to amazing possibilities and deeply consider the irreparable damage that’s been done and could continue. Take the rage that’s identified with the side that you’re on away for a moment and imagine the best Pictou County you possibly can. Act in a way that upholds that vision.

Of course, we all have jobs in that scenario but what about our quality of life, if we can’t eat the food from our waters? If we can’t take our kids to the beach? If the people we love are dying from breathing?

The divide ripping through my home is devastating. Please work together so I can bring my family back some day.

Sarah Dobson,

Former Pictou County resident
