SuperWalk for Parkinson’s back for another year
It is one of the big events for the Pictou County Parkinson’s Support Group.
It is the 12th annual SuperWalk in Pictou County and will be held Sept. 8 at Northumberland Regional High School.
“This is perhaps one of the largest there is in Pictou County,” said Margaret Milne, who lost her husband 15 years ago to Parkinson’s, a chronic and progressive brain disorder that causes loss of muscle control. “Usually, there are lot of family members of someone with Parkinson’s. It’s a family thing. I think that’s probably why people stay with it — they want to pass it forward.”
Milne and some of the others in the support group had an information booth set up Saturday at the New Glasgow Farmer’s Market, wanting to let people know of the event, which is not just a fundraiser, but also serves to raise awareness (participants collect pledges to raise funds).
Josephine Jollymore’s late husband died from the disease 12 years ago.
She said the SuperWalk will attract around 40 people who are involved with the local Parkinson’s Support Group, “and that’s just from our group. There will be other walkers as well.”
In Pictou County, there are a lot of worthy causes for people to donate toward, and Dennis McGee, who is currently living with Parkinson’s, said the kindness of county residents is always appreciated.
“People are pretty generous,” he said, “especially in Pictou County.”
