Westville Heritage Group learns about seniors’ outreach

-

Mary MacLellan was guest speaker at the September meeting for the Westville Heritage Group.

She spoke of the specific needs in Pictou County for Seniors Outreach.

She has been faithfully working hard for seniors in Pictou County for 40 years.

Over the last several years there were 3,000 calls, with lunch-andlearns in Caribou River, Scotsburn, Lyons Brook, Hopewell, Little Harbour, MacPhersons Mills and Pictou, with 1,300 meals prepared. Community Links funded $1,000 from a grant and it has been going for the last three years. Aging Well Together Coalition is funded from Aberdeen Hospital.

Members also discussed the upcoming Pictou County Seniors Police Academy. The goal of the five-week program is to enrich a safer, healthier community. The Academy gives participants a look at law enforcement, presented by local police agencies and partners.

It is held Tuesdays, Sept. 25 through Oct. 23, 10 to 11:30 a.m. at New Glasgow Regional Police Station’s Community Room. Topics could include cannabis, traffic, scams and fraud, street crime and others. Light snacks will be provided. It is sponsored by the Pictou County Community Health Board Wellness Fund and Pictou County Crime Prevention. Registration is free but mandatory as space is limited. Call 902755-2886.

Thank-you cards were received from a Grade 6 Westville student and a Northumberland High School student thanking the Heritage Group for monetary gifts.

Bowling has started with 12 members, but there is room for more. There were 50 people who attended the recent exercise class. Ukulele class will start soon.

Three members were remembered during the shut-in report.

Next meeting will be held Oct. 1.
