Blizzards nab Atlantic gold in Fredericton
The New Glasgow DQ Blizzards captured the Peewee AA Atlantic baseball championship this past weekend in Fredericton, N.B.
In the championship game, New Glasgow defeated the host team 7-3.
Cory MacGillivray pitched 5 1/3 innings to pick up the win and Keinon Decoste collected the save. Earlier in the day, the Blizzards won the tie-breaking game versus New Brunswick (2) in a 14- 4 final. Carter Dickson was the winning pitcher.
In round-robin action on opening day, the Blizzards defeated P.E.I., 11-8 with Landon Steele collecting the win on the mound. Later in the day, the Blizzards defeated Newfoundland 17-2 with MacGillivray getting the win.
On Saturday morning, New Glasgow faced a strong opponent in the host team and came out on the wrong end of a 13-3 score. The second game of the day then turned into a must-win for the Blizzards. They would face the New Brunswick 2 entry and New Glasgow came out on top 11-1. Lane Lochead was the winning pitcher.
Tournament awards were presented to Jax Graham (top defensive player), Dickson (top offensive player), and Lochead (MVP). During Saturday night’s skills event, Graham took home fastest runner and Ethan MacKay, MacGillivray, DeCoste, and Steele fastest ‘around the horn’ competition.
New Glasgow had the best overall team score to capture the top team award.
