Authors encouraged to take part as National Novel Writing Month gets underway in Pictou County libraries

- Trecia Schell Trecia Schell is the community services librarian and branch librarian for Books-by-Mail, River John, Stellarton and Trenton Public Libraries.

November is one of our favourite months of the year at the library. It is a literary fan favourite, bookish delight for novel aficionados.

November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). We have a whole month to inspire creative writing and encourage budding authors to “Get write in” and “get ’er done!” The www.NaNoWriMo.org website has many helpful, inspiring tools — such as joining an online community to provide the much-needed prods and mentoring to get the “50,000 word novel project” completed by the deadline at midnight on Nov. 30. Interestingly enough, several new authors have been discovered through the NaNoWriMo project, and some selected entries have gone on to be selfpublished and later, optioned by a publishing house.

The NaNoWriMo is a fun, seatof-your-pants approach to creative writing — valuing enthusiasm, determination and a deadline. NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel. In support, we invite you to “come write in” and drop by the library to find a quiet corner to write, to read, meet up with other authors, research topics, borrow books and print copies. In addition to providing many books on writing, comfy chairs, tables, bathrooms, free public computers with internet access and printers, the library also has two online resource pages of inspiration, the Readers’ Café at www.parl.ns.ca/resources/ readers.php and helpful tips — “All about writing” ... the write stuff, found at www.parl.ns.ca/resources/writers.php.

And because we love connecting readers with authors (who love their books), coming up soon we have two award-winning, much-loved author readings at the library. Carol Bruneau will be by the Antigonish Library on Nov. 14 (7 p.m.) to read from her new book, A Circle in the Surface. And, as an early Christmas gift, Lesley Crewe will be reading her new book, Beholden, on Dec. 1 (2:30 p.m.), also at the Antigonish Library. All are welcome to join us, light refreshments will be served and copies of the books will be available for purchase.

Also coming up next week, on Nov. 6 at 6:30 p.m., the Pictou County Naturalists are hosting an evening presentation at the New Glasgow Library by John Paterson, with the NS Nature Trust. Mr. Paterson will be speaking about his work with seabirds in Nambia, to protecting the watershed of the St. Mary’s River and the 100 Islands of the Eastern Shore. The following day, on Nov. 7 at 2:30 p.m., the Westville Library Community Café will feature a private tour of the Pictou County Military Museum led by David Avery, who will also share with us his knowledge about some local military heroes. All are welcome to drop by and join us.

Please note, the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library will be closed for Remembrance Day on Nov. 11 and 12.

For more information on upcoming library programs, special events and services, please drop by your local library branch, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook or visit us online at www. parl.ns.ca.
