Pictou County teams clean up at Subway Cup

The Peewee AA Subway Selects were the division winners at the Subway Cup Oct. 28.

The game against Metro West Force Blue on Oct. 26 ended in a 2-2 tie, with Selects goals by Mya MacDonald, from Ella Fitt, and Chloe Garcia, from Elizabeth MacEachern.

The first game Oct. 27 was a 1-0 win against P.E.I. Central Storm, with the Selects goal by Sophie Forward from Reese Murray. Goalie Caitlyn Cleary had the shutout.

A second game Oct. 27 ended with a 3-1 win against Metro East Inferno, with Selects goals by Garcia from Namara Clarke, Anna Kennaley from Karlee Rose, and Kennaley from Lily Leblanc.

The championsh­ip game on Oct. 28 was a 1-0 win against Metro West Force Blue with the only goal of the game scored by Garcia from Fitt.

Cleary had her second shutout in the tournament.

Bantam AA Selects win silver

The Bantam AA Subway Selects came a goal short from running the table at the Subway Cup. They were edged in the final 1-0 by the tournament champions Western Phantoms of New Brunswick.

The Selects advanced to the final with a 4-1 semifinal win over

Metro West Blue.

Erin MacNeil, Jaylen Langille, Olivia Fitt and Bree MacPherson all scored for the Selects, with Megan Smith and Willa Evans providing assists. The winning goaltender was Gabby Arsenault.

The Selects had a perfect 4-0 record in round-robin play as Arsenault and the defence in front of her gave up no goals in those four games.

Game one saw the Selects beat Western Wind (P.E.I.) 2-0. Baillie Griffon and Julia MacDonald were the scorers, with assists from Emily Hart and Kenzie Greencorn.

Game two was also a 2-0 victory against Central Storm (P.E.I.). Fitt scored both goals for the Selects with assists from Smith and MacNeil on both goals.

Game 3 saw Fitt tip in a Sarah Fraser point shot as the Selects edged Newbridge Academy 1-0.

The fourth game saw the Selects edge the Cape Breton Blizzard 1-0. Langille scored the only goal with help from Fitt and Josie Dunn.

Midget success

Both the AAA Midgets and AA Midgets captured gold medals at the Subway Cup.

For the AAA Midgets, goal scorers in the 5-0 final over Northern Lightening were Tori MacPherson, Cassie Clarke, KJ Emery, Natalie MacKay and Ashley Livingston.

In the Midget AA championsh­ip game, the Selects edged Metro West Force 1-0, with Keighan DeCoff getting the only goal, assisted by Paige MacDonald.

Kenzie O’Donnell was player of the game for the Selects, making several game saving stops to secure the win.

It was the team’s second Subway Cup Midget AA championsh­ip in a row.
