Snooker championships coming
Maritime Snooker championships coming to New Glasgow
Top players in Maritimes set to face off Nov. 3-4.
On the table: a Maritime championship, a trip to nationals and $400.
That’s what’s up for grabs for the winner when the Maritime Snooker Championship takes place Nov. 3 and 4 in New Glasgow.
“The best snooker players in the Maritimes will be here, trying to get that title,” said Billy Martin, who is hoping to bring home his third Maritime championship in four years.
Martin has been playing snooker for roughly 50 years.
“I started playing when I was 12,” he said as he played a casual game at the club, which was recently expanded to allow for more tables for both snooker and eight-ball.
“I learned how to play snooker at Deemers Pool Hall in Pictou. Since then, I’ve always played it.”
Martin has so many snooker titles he’s lost track of them all. He’s been to the Canadian championship 11 times, and although he’s never won a national crown, he always enjoys the experience. It’s a chance to test his skills against the best snooker players in the country, he says.
“Just going there is a big deal. They all play snooker like God – they’re awesome players, but it’s always fun just to go.”
Martin started the Century Snooker Club - where the Maritime tournament will take place - with his wife about 25 years ago. He expects that a healthy contingent of players based out of the Century club will take part.
In all, he expects that around 30 players will gather at his facility on East River Road – players from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and perhaps even further afield.
“We might get some players from Prince Edward Island,” he said.
The single-knockout tournament will feature an open class and a AAA class and will take place Nov. 3 and 4.
