$14,000 boost

IOOF Hall gets new life with new roof, repairs

-

Coun. Andy Thompson is a firm believer in the importance of community centres to rural people.

“For me, those community buildings — especially in the remote areas of Pictou County — are extremely important to the community. That’s where they hold all their events,” said the county councillor.

That’s why he’s happy to see a recent project to repair the roof, gutters and fascia boards at the IOOF Hall in Sunny Brae has been completed.

The roughly $14,000 project was paid for with money from the community, the provincial government as well as the Municipality of Pictou County.

For a building that was aging and badly in need of repairs, it adds security for the future and helps protect it from damage.

“The community is quite happy about it,” he said. “They’re looking to do more work to the building.”

In the future, Thompson said he’d like to see more projects like this go ahead, particularly ones that will make community centres in the county more accessible for elderly people and those with mobility issues.
