This takes the cake

All walks of creativity were on display in Stellarton during the second annual Call of the Moon event.

STELLARTON, N.S. — The second annual Call of the Moon Festival in Stellarton was, as predicted, a success.

The event was organized by Art of Divination owner Carrie Stewart with the help of volunteers and included many vendors and psychics and crafters.

Tickets were sold on a piece of art work, as well as a cake, with proceeds going to Pictou County Helpers, a non-profit which helps people in need in Pictou County.

Stewart said they were appreciative of the NSCC campus in Stellarton which accommodated them after their initial location fell through due to a death in the community.

What she likes about the event is that it offers people the chance to showcase what they do or make.

Jessy Redford of Salty Siren Sisters was one of the vendors that took part.

“It’s been amazing,” she said. “This is our first year”

She said they hope to be able to take part in the years to come.

Tayleur Sutherland, who does hypnosis, was another first-time participant. He just moved back to Pictou County recently.

“Originally it was the first and only fair I heard about that does alternative healing and things like that which I fit in with pretty well,” he said.

He said hypnosis can help people with a wide range of issues from quitting smoking to losing weight and getting over fears. Some have even said it helps with allergies.

“It’s also fairly traditionally used for relaxation and stress relief,” he said.

Wanda Hamilton also had a booth to talk about sound therapy.

“People don’t realize that 10 or 15 minutes can change your life,” she said.

Amanda Verge, who decorated the cake that tickets were being sold on, also had a table set up to sell her products.

“I used to do it constantly with my grandmother years ago but then life just kind of hit us and now I’m trying to get back into it again,” she said.

Pictou County Helper’s Jill Gellately said a fundraiser like this is a huge benefit to the organization because it gets their name out and also helps meet financial needs.

“Sometimes the fundraising part can be very overwhelming when we’re dealing with so many cases,” she said.

She said the group is constantly getting requests for help.

“It’s continually getting bigger and bigger every day and we’re trying to evolve with the necessary changes that are needed to grow with the need.”
