A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE IN TWO NOVA SCOTIA HOSPITALS

A recent stay at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow gave me a new perspective of our medical system.

Many letters and constant complaints are in the news which would imply that all of our medical care is in jeopardy. To be sure, many of the concerns are very real. At the same time we must give credit to those who are responsible for us when we enter a hospital or medical centre, and look after our needs.

The reality is that the doctors and nursing shortage is of grave concern. We must, to be fair, give credit to any positive experiences we encounter in any situation. I entered the emergency department early one morning with terrible pain and only waited for about 10 minutes before I was ushered into the examining room.

The nurses were outstanding and after blood samples and other procedures, Dr. Straub came to see me who, after further examining me, decided to admit me. I was very relieved and pain medications were ordered in short order.

The only beds available were in maternity. Following some fun conversations regarding that move, I soon found myself in a place where care was consistent with a professional nursing staff, and other hospital staff, who were attentive in a manner one would expect. Doctors were in attendance who were friendly and showed immense interest in my well-being.

I had to be transferred to Halifax for a procedure and I had apprehension as to what and how treatment would be administered. The worry was for naught as I quickly was surrounded by wonderful nurses and doctors who took care of me for a short half-hour stay and then back to the Aberdeen for a few more days to rest and receive further treatment. I am fully aware of the negativity surrounding our medical predicaments, but I had complete and professional care that I wish to share. The Aberdeen and the QE2 were simply marvellous and I would be amiss if I did not write to the editor, as well as both hospitals. A huge thank you to all who took care of me in such a wonderful way.
