NEW GLASGOW — Residents, family, friends and staff at Glen Haven Manor celebrated a big milestone this past week.

On Oct. 27, 1969, Glen Haven Manor opened as a continuing care facility and a half-century later, is still going strong.

“Fifty years ago, the doors of this wonderful facility opened,” said board chairman John Guthro as he gave a brief speech in front of those gathered in front of a group who had crowded in a hallway at Glen Haven. “The towns of New Glasgow, Stellarton, Trenton and Westville came together to have Glen Haven built and it was hailed as the beginning of a bright new era for nursing homes.”

“Glen Haven has stood the test to time and is today a leader in continuing care, an employer of choice and a vital part of our community,” said Guthro.

As many of the celebration,

a ribbon-cutting took place for Clara’s Way, a small area of Glen Haven Manor that honours Clara Teed, currently a resident and a former personal care worker when it first opened.

“We have long awaited this special day and the excitement has been mounting,” said Glen Haven Manor chief executive officer Lisa Smith.

“Clara, thank you for being our ambassador with the same grace and dignity that have been signatures of your career and your life.

“These past 50 years have been full of so many memories and milestones. Glen Haven represents a family, and a sense of belonging. Glen Haven residents, residents’ families and our team form meaningful relationships and a special bond — these connections will take us forward into the next 50 years with a vision to be the premiere care provider in Nova Scotia and to build vitality and momentum in continuing care.”
