‘I want it to energize you’

Artist Colin Cook takes over New Glasgow studio space on Dec. 8

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — Working away in his White Hill home studio is where local artist Colin Cook usually feels most at peace.

“Almost every evening I just sit down and paint,” said Cook. “I don’t think about what I’m painting, I just start.”

Now, Cook has his work on display.

“I want it to energize you,” said Cook, standing outside 135 Provost St., where his work has been receiving admiration since first being unveiled on Dec. 1. “I want it to brighten up the room and make it look alive.”

Cook’s canvass displays the human form in ways that people seldom see it — washed in vibrant and flowing colours that pop off the wall.

This may be Cook’s first show, but it is certainly not the first time that people have seen his work around town. A graphic designer by trade, Cook has made his mark on hundreds of airbrushed vehicles throughout his more than 30-year career.

Indeed, Cook’s artistic exploration began as far back as high school, crediting his principal, the late Edmund Doucette, with encouraging him and essentially commissioning Cook to paint murals in the school.

For Cook, who has worked in graphic design for more than 30 years, painting these creations has been an escape from the confines of every-day life.

“It’s a release,” he said. “You don’t have to be so structured, you just let your imagination go and see where it takes you.”

Colin Cook’s Creations Art Show will be on display again at 135 Provost St., Dec. 8 from 5 until 7 p.m.
