Weeks rally for huge win

Dartmouth hosting Pictou County for pair of games this weekend

WESTVILLE ROAD, N.S. — The Pictou County Weeks Major Midgets needed that one. In their first-round playoff series against Dartmouth Steele Subaru, Weeks rallied from a two-goal deficit to win 6-5 to tie up the best-of-seven Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League affair at one game apiece. At the Pictou County Wellness Centre on Feb. 9, Weeks were down 1-0 in the series and trailed 3-1 in Game 2 in the second period, but struck quickly to tie the game, when Lucas Canning and Bryson Currie buried goals 43 seconds apart. “We found our rhythm,” Weeks coach Kyle MacLennan said. “We started skating and doing all the little things really well.” Weeks went down 4-3 early in the third, but two goals from Ryan Green and a Merle Putnam marker put Weeks ahead for good. Cale MacLaughlin also had a goal for Pictou County, tipping in a first-period shot with his team on a power play. After losing in double overtime in Game 1, which saw Weeks run into a hot goaltender in Robert Forbes, (Tanner Greatorex and Lucas Canning had the Pictou County goals), Weeks wanted to avoid going down 2-0 on the series, with the next two games in Dartmouth this weekend. “We were all aware we were down one and it was vital to get that second game and square things up,” MacLennan said. Greatorex, Weeks’ captain who was named a secondteam all-star in the NSMMHL for his work on the blueline this season, suggested his team started to play a bit more loose after falling behind. “Some of the guys maybe were a little caught up in everything that was going on,” the Truro native said. “But when you take a step back and look at it all, this is a lot more fun than the regular season.” He echoed the thought that winning Game 2 was a big momentum-changer. “It was important to get the win in Pictou County because it’ll be tougher to get a win in Dartmouth. “There’s not much to say,” he added. “We’ve got to go down there and play our game and I think if we do that, we’ll get the outcome we want.”
