Miners capture Bradley Crowther Memorial Challenge Cup

WESTVILLE — It was a great weekend of hockey at the Hector Arena as the Westville Miners went 3-1 heading into the championsh­ip game of the Bradley Crowther Memorial Challenge.

In Game 1, the Miners came out flying defeating the New Glasgow Bombers 10-3.

Goals from Nick Peterson (2), Mitch Jardine (2), Kyle Reim, Cole Greene, Jachob Greene, Lucas Cameron, Dawson MacDonald and Noah MacDonald. Assists to Kyle Reim (3), Nick Peterson (2), Liam Hynes (2) Ethan MacKenzie, Lucas Cameron, Mitch Jardine, Nolan MacDonald, Dawson MacDonald and Chris Avery.

Player of the game was Kyle Reim.

In Game 2, the Miners made their way through the Thorburn 2 Hawks 6-1.

Goals from: Robie Cameron (3) Lucas Cameron, Nolan MacDonald and Mitch Jardine.

Assists from: Kyle Reim (3), Nolan MacDonald (2), and Mitch Jardine

Player of the Game was Robie Cameron.

In Game 3, the Miners fell short in a 3-1 loss to Thorburn 1 Hawks.

Goal from Lucas Cameron, assisted by Cole Greene and Robie Cameron

Player of the Game was Jacob Fraser.

The Miners finished 1st seed in their division to play the Pictou 1 Maripacs in a hard-fought battle the Miners took the cross over game with a 2-1 Victory.

In the Championsh­ip game, the Miners went to war with the Canso Bluefins to come out on top with a 4-1 victory to capture the championsh­ip.

The Miners opened the scoring with a short-handed breakaway goal, sniping the top corner glove side for the Miners was Kyle Reim.

Three minutes later, Robie Cameron one-timed a pass from Mitch Jardine to take a two goal lead.

One minute later, Lucas Cameron took a pass from John Otto Bell and skated in and buried the third to take a commanding lead of 3-0 at the end of the first.

Canso began to pour on lots of shots, and Jacob Fraser was up to the challenge, making four game-changer saves to keep Canso off the board until 55 seconds left in the 2nd with Tyson Greencorn breaking the shutout.

In the third period, the Miners took a few penalties, and came out flat. Canso poured on the pressure with shots and Fraser shut the door. Jachob Greene and Nick Peterson blocked two one timer shots back to back and the Miners came alive with energy. With two minutes left in the game Reim setup Cameron in the slot with a five-hole one timer to put the nail in the coffin for the Bluefins as the Miners. Player of the game was Jacob Fraser.

This coming weekend, the Miners head to Truro to compete in the Truro Friendship tournament.
