Two police officers stabbed in New Glasgow, suspect arrested

A 26-year-old man who stabbed two police officers on Chisholm Street has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

At about 12:35 p.m., while assisting New Glasgow Regional Police, two members of the Stellarton Police Service and one member of the Westville Police Service responded to a follow-up complaint at a residence to conduct a wellbeing check of a man.

During the police follow up, an altercatio­n took place between the three officers and the man, resulting in two of the officers being stabbed.

The two injured officers, one from the Westville Police Service and the other from the Stellarton Police Service, went to the Aberdeen Hospital with non-life-threatenin­g injuries and have been released.

Const. Ken Macdonald of the New Glasgow Regional Police said he did not have an more informatio­n on the extent of the injuries.

"It was serious enough for them to go to the hospital," he said.

A 60-year-old woman from Pictou County was charged with obstructin­g a police officer during the incident.

The 26-year-old man from Pictou County was arrested and has been charged with attempted murder, uttering threats, breach of probation, assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, assaulting a police officer, and resisting arrest.

The accused is currently being held in police custody. New Glasgow Regional Police Major Crime Unit continues to investigat­e.

This incident is unrelated to a separate incident that happened about the same time on Hillcrest Avenue in New Glasgow.
