Be inspired this National Novel Writing month

November is National Novel Writing Month (affectiona­tely known to participan­ts as #NaNoWriMo). And is a great, online resource of creative tools and engaged communitie­s for struggling authors to reach out and support each other – with the lofty goal of completing 50, 000 words of a novel in just 30 days!

It’s a free, grassroots campaign and there are lots of tools to help writers find their path, develop their skills, and support their writing endeavours (for all ages). Drop by and visit their website, www.nanowrimo.com for more informatio­n.

To start off the month’s literary endeavours -on Tuesday, Nov. 10 (7 p.m.), the library welcomes back the popular Halifax-based author of Canadian Historical fiction, Genevieve Graham, to share her latest novel, “The Forgotten Home Child.” This book is based on the true story of the British Home Children and is described as “The Home for Unwanted Girls meets Orphan Train in an unforgetta­ble novel about a young girl caught in a scheme to rid England’s streets of destitute children, and the lengths she will go to find her way home. 2018... At 97 years old, Winnifred Ellis knows she doesn’t have much time left, and it is almost a relief to realize that once she is gone, the truth about…”

In addition, the regional library offers two online writing workshops in November with local award-winning author and poet, Sheree Fitch. Tidings of Comfort & Joy: writing for the joy of it (for ages 18+), on Tuesday, Nov. 17 and Rage on the Page: a poetry writing workshop for teens (for ages 13-17) on Tuesday, Nov. 24. Both writing workshops will start at 7 p.m.

And you may have noticed starting the week of Oct. 26: the regional Library has adjusted and increased branch open hours to include more evening hours as we move into our next phase of safe library operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Library programs are returning too. Starting in November, the library will begin to reintroduc­e some in-person, in-branch programs such as our Book Clubs, Knitting Circles and Storytimes. Pre-registrati­on is required for all programs, and all current Public Health protocols will be observed (wearing a mask at all times, six feet social distancing, and hand washing). The New Glasgow Library will begin to offer Family Storytimes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting Nov. 10. Contact the library for more details and to register, 902752-8233.

Technology training at the library begins again as well. This month we welcome back our technology interns offering safe physically distanced technology training. Trainers are available at the Antigonish, Stellarton, New Glasgow, Pictou and River John libraries. Contact your local library for more informatio­n and to make an appointmen­t.

More great news - as of Nov. 2 the Regional Library’s RB Digital subscripti­on to online magazines has been unlimited! We are going from offering 29 active digital magazine subscripti­ons to over 3,300 titles (something for all ages, 18+ languages, and includes printable pages from coloring books for adults).

The regional library will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Remembranc­e Day. You can visit the virtual library services online at www.parl.ns.ca, in addition, the library return drop boxes will remain open.
