Brocks drops 2-1 decision to Guelph

Curtis Li was a B finalist for the Badgers in both the 50 and 100 breaststro­ke events.

Despite having the smallest team at the OUA championsh­ips, the Brock women placed eighth in team scores and the men 11th.

Loss in double OT

Brock dropped a 2-1 decision in double overtime to the No. 2-ranked Guelph Gryphons in university women’s hockey.

After a scoreless opening period, the Badgers opened the scoring 8:43 into the second as Maggie SprattMall­ick set up Lisa Buratynski for a power-play goal. It was her fourth goal of the season.

Guelph tied the game 4:57 into the third period as Sophie Contant beat Brock goaltender Jensen Murphy for her fifth goal of the campaign.

Brock outshot Guelph 6-4 in the first overtime which no one could answer. With 3-on-3 in the second overtime, Karli Shell set up Claire Merrick with 1:18 left in OT for the game winner.

In goal, Nurphy recorded 29 saves in the loss while Guelph starter Valerie Lamenta collected 39 saves for the victory. Season ends 2-0 The Brock Badgers defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 5-2 and Royal Military College to close out the men’s university hockey season fifth in their division with a 14-131 record.

Sammy Banga led the Badgers versus Toronto with a career-high five points (2 goals, 3 assists), followed by Andrew Radjenovic with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) and Matt Macleod with two points (2 goals). Defenseman Dexter Weber also contribute­d with two assists.

In goal, Clint Windsor made 33 saves for the victory.

Josh Timpano, Banga, McLeod and Radjenovic found the back of the net in the win over RMC.

Alex Brooks-Potts recorded 27 saves in the win.

T-Birds clipped

Brock men’s basketball downs Algoma 72-55

Johneil Simpson scored a gamehigh 20 points, including four three-pointers, to help lead the fourth-ranked Brock Badgers defeat the Algoma Thunderbir­ds in men’s university basketball.

Nolan Mackenzie, with 15 points on a 6-for-8 performanc­e from the floor; and Dani Elgadi, 12 points, eight rebounds; also reached double digits in scoring in Friday night’s win at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Two road games remain in league play for the Badgers: Wednesday, at Western; Saturday, at Windsor. Badgers net win Three players scored in double digits – Melissa Tatti, 21 points; Alex Symonds, 13; Bridget Atkinson, 12 – as the Brock Badgers defeated the Algoma Thunderbir­ds 66-45 in women’s university basketball Friday night in St. Catharines.

Brock took a 36-27 lead into the final half and cruised to a win despite being outscored 15-9 in the third quarters by the visitors from Sault Ste. Marie.

Atkinson and Symonds had eight rebounds and five rebounds, respective­ly, for the Badgers.

The Badgers visit Western on Wednesday and Windsor on Saturday to close out league play.

Split in V-ball

The Brock University women’s volleyball team split its two matches over the weekend dropping a 3-2 decision to York and defeating Nipissing 3-2.

In the win over the Lakers, the Badgers were led by Renee Helmer who finished with a game-high 18 kills and 20.5 points, respective­ly. Laura Condotta contribute­d 11 kills, and 16 digs for the double-double in the Badgers victory.

Freshman setter Emily Armstrong had a game-high 42 assists and 11 digs, and senior libero Karlinna O’Leary came up with 19 digs.

Leading the Badgers in the loss to the Lions was Renee Helmer, 19 kills with six errors on 34 total attempts, good for a team-high .382 hitting percentage. Laura Condotta chipped with 12 kills. O’Leary had a team-high 15 digs and setter Hannah Davenhill added 28 assists.

0-2 weekend

The Brock Badgers were unable to tame the York Lions or run the Nipissing Lakers aground on the weekend in men’s university volleyball

Timmy Spisar had 14 skills, Marcelo 35 assists and Felipe Costa nine digs for Brock in a four-set loss to York – 16-25, 17-25, 30-28, 19-25.

Spisar, 15 kills, 11 digs; Calvin Fast, eight kills, five digs; and Damon Currie, six kills, five digs; were standouts in the Badgers in the loss to Nipissing. Set scores were 19-25, 12-25, 25-20 and 23-25.

On track for records

The Windsor Team Challenge was the most-competitiv­e meet of the season for Brock University’s track and field team.

Many personal best, season bests and Brock records were set at Saturday’s event in Windsor.

Anna Wojtis finishes 11th in the 60-metre finals running a Brock record and personal best of 8.00. Emma Alderton, 8.54; Tomas Dychtiar, 7.60; David Velez 7.87; and Jude Pass, 7.60; achieved personal bests in the same event.

JoannaFran­colini,women’s1,500; Lucas Reid, men’s 1,500; and Akshar Patel, men’s 1,500; achieved personal bests on the track im Windsor, while Alex Ratcliffe, women’s 600; set a personal best – and a Brock – record Alex Ratcliffe with a time of 1:42.52 to place 12th overall.

In the 600 personal bests were set by Alyssa Point (1:48.07), Brooke Augustus (1:48.58) Michaela Point (1:52.93), Branden Gallagher (1:28.60) and Ben Beuttenmil­ler (1:28.59 - SB). Ryan Gagnon set a personal best in the 1,000m with a time of 2:42.12.

Brock’s men’s 4-by-200 A relay team – Matt Francis, Paul Bisnauth, Ben Gadsby and Dychtiar – finished fifth in a school-record :33.81. In the women’s 4-by-400 relay, (Alyssa Point, Michaela Point, Augustus and Alex Ratcliffe finished in 4:26.49 to set a new season best.

In long jump Alvin Fortaleza jumped a season-best of 5.63. In triple jump Kwaku Bonsu placeed fourth and set and Brock record and personal best with a jump of 13.46.

Alvin Fortaleza set a personal best with a jump of 12.15. Precious Omoruyi got a personal best in shot put with a throw of 9.16.
