City art competition returns
The City of Niagara Falls Art Competition returns to the Victoria Avenue library.
Open to all Niagara Falls residents — and students attending school in the Falls — the show will run March 30 to April 2.
It’s the second year of a “revamped” city art show which used to be tied to the Santa Claus Parade in November. Clark Bernat, the city’s manager of art, culture and museums, says organizers were “very happy” with the response from local artists last year.
“It was a revamped show with a new time of year, and we were very satisfied with the quality of the show last year,” he said. “As a committee, it was felt that moving it away from November … allowed it to be a stand-alone event.”
Prizes will be handed out in three age groups: 11 to 14, 15 to 18, and 19 or older. Judges will consider two categories, computer generated and photography and fine art, with trophies also going to the judges’/mayor’s choice and people’s choice. Winners of each category will receive a $100 cash reward.
All art must be delivered to the library (4848 Victoria Ave.) between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. March 30. The competition will be closed to the public March 31 for judging, and will re-open for public viewing April 1 during regular library hours.
Art must be original and completed within the past 12 months, and be ready to hang. It must also fit through a standard door.
After the show, art must be picked up by 2 p.m. on April 2. Any remaining work will become property of the city.
There is no fee to enter, but participants are encouraged to register in advance.
“We certainly are looking for growth in both quantity and quality,” says Bernat, “but will continue to provide an avenue for local artists to showcase their work in a public place.” jlaw@postmedia.com
