Investigation continues into violent assaults

- ALISON LANGLEY NIAGARA FALLS REVIEW

Niagara police continue to search for suspects in connection with a series of violent assaults that occurred in the Fallsview tourist area Friday evening.

“The investigation into the assaults on Friday night is ongoing,” said Sgt. Rich Gad re au, of the Niagara Regional Police. “Officers have been working hard to identify the responsible parties and to make sure the tourist area of Niagara Falls is as safe as possible for residents and visitors.”

The first incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Feb. 24 when a group of males confronted a couple on Portage Road, near Fallsview Boulevard.

Police said one of the males tried to rob the male victim and assaulted him with a weapon.

Less than 10 minutes later, a couple standing on a terrace at the rear of the Embassy Suites Hotel on Fallsview Boulevard were approached by the same group of suspects. Police said a male victim was violently assaulted in an unprovoked attack.

At 9:45 p.m., the group approached a lone male standing in the area of Dixon Street at Fallsview Boulevard. The man was also assaulted in an unprovoked attack.

In each incident, police said, the victims were taken to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The suspects in all three incidents are described as being 18-to-25 years of age, wearing hoodies and baggy pants.

Meanwhile, early Saturday, police say a man walking on Stanley Avenue near Main Street was assaulted and robbed by a lone male. The suspect in that case is described as black, in his early 20s, with a medium build.

The investigation is also continuing into a shooting early Friday that sent a young female to hospital.

Police responded to a 911 call from the area of Lundy’s Lane and Montrose Road around 2:45 a.m. and discovered the victim, a passenger in a car, suffering from non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the victim is not from the area and detectives believe the shooting took place somewhere along Lundy’s Lane.

Gadreau said the victim and the suspect are known to each other.

“It does not appear to be a random incident,” he said.
