Hyundai i30 Tourer would make a fine Elantra wagon

- NICK TRAGIANIS DRIVING.CA

Hyundai is taking a piece of forbidden fruit to the Geneva Motor Show next month.

We’ve already met the Elantra sedan and the hatchback, known as the i30 outside North America. Now, Hyundai is taking the wraps off the i30 Tourer — or what we might call an Elantra wagon.

Under the skin, the i30 Tourer is identical to its siblings. The platform is Hyundai’s steel-intensive ‘Superstructure’ and power comes from a handful of gas and diesel engines, varying from a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine with 118 horsepower, all the way up to a 1.4-L turbo-four with 138 hp.

Hyundai is still mum on whether it’ll offer its 201-hp turbo four with the i30 Touring. It would certainly make for a lively little family hauler.

Like the i30 hatch, the wagon will include a fair share of otherwise premium features, such as LED headlights, a touch-screen infotainment system with GPS navigation, and of course, a bunch of active safety features that include automatic braking, a blind-spot monitor and lane-keep assist, to name a few.

The Hyundai i30 Tourer will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show this month. Whether or not Hyundai will sell the i30 Tourer in North America as an Elantra wagon remains to be seen, but a little competition for the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen certainly wouldn’t hurt.
