Viewing access at Thompson’s Point on the Niagara Parkway will be closed from March 13-31 for the final stages of construction of WildPlay Niagara’s Whirlpool Adventure Course.

The closure is necessary to ensure public safety during completion of the final three Adventure Course challenges to be raised at the outdoor attraction, which opens this on bars, beam, vault and floor.

Push ups, chin ups and handstand pushups — where she’d stand on her hands against a wall, lower her body until her head touched the floor, then push up — were among the conditioning exercises.

Even now, she weight trains at a local gym, and can chin up her own 140-pound weight, at least eight times, over two or three repetitions.

Back then, she was also on the Scorpions, Navy Seals travel cheerleading team.

Sports is purpose.

“It’s given her an outlet. It’s given her structure,” said Amy. “It’s some place to be and some place to belong.”

When Tara started playing baseball at age 12, she could throw a ball from home plate to second base, beyond the ability of many boys on her team. And when she was up at bat, players on the opposing team often shouted, “back up,” in anticipation of her long hits into the outfield, said Amy.

A couple of years ago, she was playing third base when the ball shot towards her from home plate, bounced off the ground and caught her in the mouth.

“I could hear it hit her, like a thud,” said Amy. “I was worried she lost teeth.”

Tara did not cry. She sat out, on the bench icing her injury, and was playing again by the next inning, said Amy.

A few months ago, Tara had words she’d been thinking about for a while tattooed onto her right arm: Life’s too short to wait.

“It will get you more in life,” she said. “There’s no time to just wait around.”

Maybe sports has taught her about life. Maybe her life, has simply equipped her to play sports.

Either way, she has learned something about herself from the journey.

“That you can push yourself,” she said.

“If you put your mind to it, you can go further instead of just giving up.” spring. The recreation trail portion will remain open during work.

The attraction was originally slated to open last summer but was delayed while awaiting permit approval from the Technical Standards Safety Authority.

Once open, the course will offer a series of suspended obstacles, bridges, log ladders, mini ziplines and rope swings.
