Woman shot in home invasion
A St. Catharines woman is recovering after being shot by one of four men who broke into a Lake Street home Monday night.
Niagara Regional Police said the suspects broke into the home before 7:30 p.m., and threatened one of the residents during an alleged robbery.
Police said one of the men was armed with a firearm which was discharged, injuring the woman whom police have not identified.
Her injuries were not considered to be life-threatening, police said.
The woman was treated at the scene by Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics and transferred to hospital.
Police said the suspects fled the scene before police arrived. They remain at large.
The weapon used in the crime has not been recovered. Asked about the type of firearm used in the shooting, police spokeswoman Const. Virginia Moir said “the type of gun is part of the ongoing investigation.”
Police said they do not believe the incident was a random act.
Moir confirmed that the shooting took place at a Lake Street home near the intersection of Russell Avenue.
Tuesday morning, yellow police caution tape was wrapped around a house at 179 Lake St., near that intersection, and a police cruiser was parked in the driveway.
The suspects were wearing black or dark clothing, with hooded sweaters or jackets covering their faces. Two of the men were believed to be white and the other two were black.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Det. Const. Jeremy DiFranco at 905-688-4111 ext. 9476.
No further details were provided by police Tuesday.
