On April 28, from 2-3 p.m. at the Crystal Ridge branch of the Fort Erie Public Library, all are welcome to attend the launch of the engaging children’s picture book, “Baby Tooth Visits the Dentist” by local authors Laura and Dr. William Schneider. The book is a joint initiative with Niagara Peninsula Dental Association and may well be the first book of its kind to take the fear out of visits to the dentist by empowering children with knowledge in an appealing, fun way.

The Battle of Ridgeway was a landmark event in the history of our country, as well as our town. On Wednesday, May 3, beginning at 7 p.m., curator Jane Davies of the Fort Erie Museum and Cultural Services will be at the Crystal Ridge branch of the library, to tell about the battle, and about the spectacular anniversary observance and reenactment held this past summer. The public is welcome to this joint program with the Bertie Historical Society. Ask, too, for books and other library materials on the history of our community.

May the Fourth has long been a day to celebrate all things Star Wars, and this year is no exception at the Centennial branch. All ages are invited to wear costumes, challenge friends to a lightsaber duel, make Star Wars crafts, and compete for awesome prizes. The Star Wars party will run from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., we will screen Rogue One: a Star Wars Story. In this first in a planned series of standalone films under the epic brand, the Rebel Alliance makes a risky move to steal the plans for the Death Star. Rogue One stars Felicity Jones and Diego Luna. The Star Wars party is free; admission to the movie is $3. All of the Star Wars movies and books for all ages based in the Star Wars universe are available in the library collection.

Teens can try an Escape Room right here in Fort Erie. On Monday, May 8, young people in grades 9 – 12 are invited to test their skill by being “locked” in a room and having to work together to solve the clues to escape. After the escape, there will be time for board games and snacks.

The library is offering a fourweek course in basic money management, beginning on May 11 and continuing through June 1, in partnership with the Adult Literacy Council of Greater Fort Erie, ABC Canada and TD Canada Trust. The series may be of special interest to newcomers and adult learners, but is open to anyone who feels a need to learn more about banking, credit, and money handling. The classes will be held each Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and there is no charge. Please call the library at 905-871-2546, ext. 305 to register.
