Ravens wrap up league title

- JEFF STEVENS SPECIAL TO POSTMEDIA NETWORK

The Smith’s Home Services Ravens have been riding atop the Niagara 5-Pin Mixed Pro League standings for a good chunk of the final segment of the season, but still needed the last night of the season to lock up top spot and finish the season with the league’s final segment title.

The Ravens knocked off the Scott Street Pete’s Pizza Pepperonis 2-1 to capture the title as Riekie Dutcher led the way for the champs firing a fantastic 882 (261, 322, 299) series, while Jason Pendlebury had a great night as well, tossing 821 (328, 248, 245) while Rich Vassos added 732 303, 218).

The Pepperonis, who finished in a tie for second place, were led by Shawn Pellizario. He was a model of consistency rolling an excellent 830 (276, 269, 285), while getting pushed by Rob Fisher’s 734 (246, 278) and Mike Owen’s 713 (290, 217).

The Pepperonis ended up tied with the Wine Place Whiners, who jumped into the tie by virtue of their 2-1 decision over the Lakeside Electrical Lightning.

Chris Disher put together one of his better nights leading the Whiners with a solid 825 (282, 351), while getting help from Kayla Ferguson’s 791 (248, 266, 277) and Al Gaudet’s 711 (211, 290).

The Lightning dropped to fifth place as Wendy Bonnette paced them with 826 (271, 284, 271) and had help from Tyler Wendel’s 756 (232, 288, 236).

The Church Street Pete’s Pizza Panzerottis took two of three from the Host Pub & Grill Half Pints to launch themselves into fourth place and drop the Half Pints to seventh.

Chantal Papineau Sparked the Panzerottis with a fantastic 897 (260, 318, 319) series, while John Wendel chipped in with 710 (235, 259) and Joanne Durocher added 683 (231, 284) for the winners.

Tracy Smith led the Half pints with 7769 (266, 305) while Sarah Stevens tossed 665 (253, 225).

The Crossfire Wrestling Piledrivers blanked the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Canucks 3-0 on the strength of Frank Newman’s 766 (265, 231, 270) and Brian McFarlane’s 630 (243, 207).

The Canucks shot back with Tim Dixon’s 718 (231, 217, 270) and Dave Pendlebury’s 693 (248, 247).

In the evening’s final match, the Ferguson-Neudorf Glass Glaziers edged the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Town Criers 2-1.

Valerie Vallee, capped off another great season, shooting the best individual performance of the night, a blistering 907 (261, 353, 293) for the Town Criers, with hall of famer Mickey Pikor added 743 (226, 243, 274).

Notes: Tyler Wendel wrapped up his first men’s high average title with a 264.3, while Dixon took second with 252.9 and Disher was right behind with 252.3 … Dixon’s second-place finish in the average category was the only blemish on his fantastic season as he captured both the men’s high single with his 450 perfect game earlier in the season, along with the men’s high triple with his 1,023 … Dutcher missed out on the ladies high average title last season by 0.01 of a pin to Vallee but made up for it this year, winning her third crown by a mere 0.8 of a pin. Dutcher added the ladies high single to her haul with 380, but missed out on the triple Crown as Vallee captured the ladies high triple with her 1,013.
