The Niagara Falls Review

Stuffies return for more mischief at the library

- AMY ROEBUCK

The power, beauty and wonder of Niagara Falls has fascinated residents and visitors alike for centuries, and it has been depicted in all seasons, times and circumstances. Retired librarian Andrew Porteus curated historic photographs of Niagara Falls — the city and the wonder of the world. He has gathered many of the most interesting to share with the public on Wednesday evening, May 17, at 7 p.m. at the Crystal Ridge branch of the Fort Erie Public Library. This is a joint program with the Bertie Historical Society. There are many books of photographs and history of Niagara Falls in the library collection. Browse online or ask at any branch.

The Stuffie Sleepover events at the Stevensville branch have become very popular, and with good reason. There is always something exciting going on in this story and craft program for all ages. On May 17 at 6 p.m., come in your pyjamas and get ready for games, crafts, bedtime stories and other fun. Don’t forget to bring your stuffie — who knows what mischief they’ll get up to after the library closes.

Have you ever wanted to learn to play a musical instrument? In May, there will be two chances for kids ages 7-12 to try their hand at the ukulele. On Friday, May 19 at 3:45 p.m. at the Centennial branch, or at the Crystal Ridge branch on Saturday, May 27 at 10 a.m., children’s librarian Karissa Fast will teach basic chords and strumming patterns on instruments provided by the library. Space in each workshop is limited, and preregistration is required. A $3 fee will be charged. Students may also bring their own ukuleles.

If your interest is art, the PD Day on May 19 will be a great time to get your paint on at the Centennial branch. Local artist Ben Featherston will lead students ages 7 to 15 through painting an alien landscape picture step by step. The cost is $5, and pre-registration is required.

There’s a new tool for consumers who want to be smart about t h e i r purchases and services.

The library now has Consumer Reports online. Visit the website www.fepl.ca, hover over Downloads in the blue bar, and click on Consumer Reports. You will need a current library card to log in. We also have Consumer Reports Buying Guides for the past three years, which can be checked out.

All branches of the library will be closed on Monday, May 22 for the Victoria Day holiday. The website is always open at www. fepl.ca for downloading of books, music, movies and more. Amy Roebuck is the community services coordinator at the Fort Erie Public Library.
