Yanks will consider adding; won’t deal top prospects

NEW YORK — Given his team’s fast start after jettisoning veterans last summer, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner will consider adding players as the trade deadline approaches in July.

Steinbrenner said New York will not trade top prospects. In hindsight, he said he should have agreed to start the team’s retooling earlier than last summer to open roster spots for catcher Gary Sanchez and right fielder Aaron Judge.

Speaking Wednesday at the baseball owners’ meeting, Steinbrenner said starting pitching has been a “pleasant surprise.” He cited rookie Jordan Montgomery, Michael Pineda and CC Sabathia.

Steinbrenner also singled out Starlin Castro, Chase Headley, Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner and Aaron Hicks for praise.

Bills hire Malik Boyd as pro personnel director

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have hired Malik Boyd to be their pro personnel director in the latest addition to general manager Brandon Beane’s new staff.

Boyd joins the Bills after spending the past 12 seasons in various scouting capacities with the Arizona Cardinals, including the past three as assistant director of pro scouting. In 2014, he was named the Fritz Pollard Alliance’s NFC scout of the year.

Boyd replaces Jim Monos, who was fired along with general manager Doug Whaley and most of Buffalo’s scouting staff a day after the NFL draft. Beane took over as GM last week and has since hired Brian Gaine as vice-president of player personnel and Joe Schoen as assistant general manager.
