Exploring Canada through trading cards

- ALISON LANGLEY

An indie publisher will be offering more than comic books at Niagara Falls Comic Con this weekend.

This will be the first time Mississauga-based Zelpha Comics will be participating in the popular three-day convention and it will mark the occasion by launching a series of trading cards to celebrate Canada’s upcoming birthday.

Zelpha’s 150 Years of Awesome Canada feature nine booklets that each contain six to 13 trading cards. Each booklet is based on a specific subject such as Prime Ministers, comic book legends and women of distinction.

“I love my country and 150 Years of Awesome Canada is my love note to this land that has given me so much,” said Luanga Lue Nuwame, founder of Zelpha Comics.

“When it came to showcase the numerous ways Canada has made its mark on the world stage and domestically, trading cards made sense as a way to share simple summarized information in a way that reflects the multiple layers of what makes Canada inclusive and interesting, while also offering a collectible memento we hope people will cherish.”

To commemorate the launch, a limited print Niagara Falls card will be available at the convention at the Scotiabank Convention Centre.

Nuwame hopes the cards will appeal to young and old alike.

“Some people think trading cards are passe but the market is beginning to rebound,” he said. “Gone are the days where trading cards were only seen as the domain for young boys. Geek culture is now everyone’s culture.”

The next convention stop for Nuwame will be later this month at the Ann Arbour Comic Arts Festival in Michigan.

“That convention will be a way to share Canada directly with our American neighbours,” Nuwame said.
