Yoga good for the soul

- HARLEY DAVIDSON

With the passing of International Day of Yoga, yoga became a part of the weekend in Niagara Falls.

The Mind, Body and Soul festival took place at Queen’s Park on Saturday, and Sunday kicked off this summer’s Yoga in the Park at Fireman’s Park.

The Saturday event saw about 23 people attend and the Sunday event saw about 10.

Indo-Canada Arts Council, which held the Mind, Body and Soul festival, say it looks forward to bringing the event back to Niagara Falls next year in a bigger fashion.

Dianne Ellis, who instructs Yoga in the Park, says yoga can help people in numerous ways.

“A lot of times people stay inside for most of the week, which can cause a lot of problems.”

She says some of those problems are shortness of breath, lack of sleep and a general feeling of depression.

“Yoga can help relieve a lot of those problems. It’s great exercise, it helps people breathe better and also smile more.”

About 10 people gathered for Yoga in the Park this week. There are seven more Yoga in the Park events left for the year, happening every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Fireman’s Park.

Yoga originated in India and is “an ancient spiritual and ascetic discipline, a part of which includes breath control, simple meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures,” according to canadayoga.ca.
