Fire destroys trailers at Sherkston

A fire that caused at least $200,000 in damages at Sherkston Shores RV Resort in Port Col borne on Thursday night is under investigation.

Port Col borne Fire and Emergency Services responded to the scene just after 8 p.m., after a fire started in one of the trailers on site.

“When we pulled out of the fire hall we could see smoke in the sky,” Fire Chief Tom Cartwright said. The fire hall is on Killaly Street West, 13 kilometres away from the lakeside resort.

All five trucks and 22 personnel responded from Port Colborne, and Fort Erie Fire Department was called in for mutual aid. Cartwright said they called for a Fort Erie tanker, which had three personnel, to ensure there was enough water.

Within an hour, the fire was under control and firefighters continued to work on spot fires after that.

Cartwright said fire prevention officer Scott Lawson was on site most of Friday investigating the cause of the blaze. He said the investigation was using technical standards and safety authority guidelines to look at things like propane connections to see if they were linked to the cause.

The fire burned through two trailers and damaged four others, along with a car and golfcarts. Cartwright said a witness on scene saw the fire originate in one of the homes, but couldn’t identify what started it.

Cartwright said it’s the biggest fire at Sherkston Shores in the last five years.
